STORY

Racheal Mwikali is a grassroots women rights and feminist activist and leader of the Coalition for Grassroots Human Rights Defenders, a social movement for the grassroots activists and human rights defenders in Kenya. Her response to COVID 19 has been to distribute food, soap and water jericans to community members living in the informal settlements of Mathare and within Nairobi County. She is also distributing menstrual products including menstrual cups and sanitary towels to women and girls. She is running community sensitization drives where she raises awareness on COVID 19.

She is also distributing contraceptives as it is expected that lack of access to contraceptives will cause a sharp rise in unintended pregnancies, an increase in sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and, ultimately, a sharp rise in unsafe abortions.

Her advocacy aims to push the government to approach COVID 19 in a Human Rights and Feminist Approach.

All the above activities have been made possible through the support and donations of friends both at local and global level.
